Comparison of physical fitness between healthy and mild-to-moderate asthmatic children with exercise symptoms: A cross-sectional study

Pediatric Pulmonology Jun 06, 2021

Sanz-Santiago V, Diez-Vega I, Donadio MVF, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to assess the differences in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, lifestyle, lung function, and functionality between asthmatics with exercise symptoms and healthy children, as well as to explore the connection between clinical history and the presence of asthma. The sample consisted of 71 patients with asthma (mean age 11.5 ± 2.7) and 71 healthy children and adolescents (mean age 10.7 ± 2.5). When compared with healthy peers, children with mild-to-moderate asthma who exhibit exercise symptoms have lower cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, lung function, functionality, and lifestyle. The study provides data for pediatricians to use to support exercise practices aimed at improving asthmatic children's prognosis and quality of life.
