Comparison of frequency of ischemic stroke in patients with vs without coronary heart disease and without atrial fibrillation

American Journal of Cardiology Nov 03, 2018

Olesen KKW, et al. - Considering substantial reductions in ischemic stroke have been seen in recent trials of antithrombotic therapy in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), researchers examined ischemic stroke risk in patients with CAD and sought those at highest risk. Patients without atrial fibrillation who underwent coronary angiography between 2004 and 2012 were assessed for ischemic stroke risk and stratified according to presence or absence of CAD. Stratification was also done with respect to the extent of CAD (0 vessel disease [VD], 1 VD, 2 VD, 3 VD, and diffuse VD). Outcomes suggest that in patients without atrial fibrillation, CAD is linked to risk of stroke, transient ischemic attack, and systemic embolism and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The highest risk of stroke was evident in patients with coronary multi-VD and hence, these patients could be considered candidates for treatment strategies that reduce ischemic stroke incidence.
