Comparing standard vs extended culture duration in acute hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Apr 29, 2019
Klement MR, et al. - Medical records were reviewed to investigate the culture yield, organism profile, and treatment success between standard (5 days) and extended (14 days) cultures in acute hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). They found no change in the rate of culture-negative PJI, identification of more cases with polymicrobial PJI, or improvement in the success of surgical treatment with extended culture duration in acute hip and knee PJIs. Higher incidence of P acnes growth was noticed, but they could not exclude contaminants or indolent chronic PJI.
