Comparing automated office blood pressure readings with other methods of blood pressure measurement for identifying patients with possible hypertension: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 09, 2019
Roerecke M, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 articles, with 9279 participants, researchers investigated the relationship between automated office blood pressure (AOBP) and office blood pressure (BP) readings measured in routine clinical practice and in research studies, and ambulatory BP recorded during awake hours, as this is a standard for predicting future cardiovascular events. From 2003 to April 25, 2018, the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched. Automated office blood pressure readings are more accurate in routine clinical practice than office BP readings, only when properly recorded with the patient sitting alone in a quiet place, and are similar to awake ambulatory BP readings, with the mean AOBP devoid of any white coat effect. Due to uncertainty about its advantages compared to more traditional methods of recording BP during an office visit, doctors were somewhat reluctant to adopt this technique. AOBP should now be the preferred method to record BP in routine clinical practice on the basis of evidence.
