Comparative effects of antidepressant medications and untreated major depression on pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review

Archives of Women's Mental Health Apr 16, 2018

Mitchell J, et al. - Given the controversial views regarding the psychopharmacological treatment of pregnant women, researchers conducted a systematic review of the literature to integrate the studies that compare risks and benefits of treated with untreated depression. They recognized a low number of studies meeting criteria highlighting the necessity for further research to aid in risk-benefit analysis for women considering antidepressant use in pregnancy. Available evidence suggests no differences regarding the risk of low birth weight and related outcomes between antidepressant-treated pregnant women and untreated depressed women and does not support discontinuing antidepressant treatment of major depression in pregnancy due to concerns about length of gestation, birth weight, or spontaneous abortion.
