Comparative effectiveness and safety of low-strength and high-strength direct oral anticoagulants compared with warfarin: A sequential cohort study
BMJ Open May 10, 2019
Pratt NL, et al. - In an Australian Veteran population, researchers compared the safety and efficacy of low-strength and high-strength direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) with warfarin. Study participants included 4,836 subjects who started oral anticoagulants (45.8%, 26.0%, and 28.2% on low-strength DOACs, high-strength DOACs, and warfarin, respectively) between August 2013 and March 2015. With low-strength DOACs vs warfarin, no difference in risk of ischemic stroke or bleeding was found using the inverse probability of treatment weighting method. Propensity score matching did not show any difference in ischemic stroke or bleeding risk. Investigators found that both DOAC formulations were comparable in effectiveness to warfarin in the practice setting and had no increased risk of bleeding.
