Cognitive performance in midlife type 2 diabetes: Results from the ENBIND study
Diabetic Medicine May 28, 2021
Dyer AH, McKenna L, Gamage G, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross‐sectional study to establish the influence of uncomplicated type 2 diabetes on cognitive and neuropsychological performance in midlife. The sample consisted of middle‐aged adults with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes and a cohort of healthy control candidates. In total, 152 candidates (102 with type 2 diabetes and 50 controls) were selected (mean age 52 ± 8 years, 51% women). Even in midlife, type 2 diabetes was linked to small but statistically significant cognitive decrements. While not clinically significant in terms of objective cognitive impairment, these statistically significant decrements may have important implications in identifying individuals most at risk of later cognitive decline for potential preventative interventions in midlife.
