Clinical outcomes during admissions for heart failure among adults with congenital heart disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 23, 2019
Agarwal A, et al. - Using the California State Inpatient Database, researchers compared adults with and without congenital heart disease (CHD) admitted for heart failure (HF), in terms of in-hospital and readmission events. They identified the type of CHD lesion, comorbidities, and in-hospital and 30-day readmissions events, using ICD codes. After adjusting for admission year, age, sex, race, household income, primary payor, and Charlson comorbidity index, they computed adjusted odds ratio. Among the participants who sought admission for HF as the primary diagnosis, substantially higher odds of longer length of stay, incident arrhythmias, and in-hospital mortality were observed among adults with CHD vs non-CHD patients. The requirement for HF risk stratification plans and management protocols specific for patients with CHD was highlighted.
