Clinical outcomes after intensifying antihypertensive medication regimens among older adults at hospital discharge
JAMA Aug 28, 2019
Anderson TS, Jing B, Auerbach A, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers explored the connection between intensification of antihypertensive regimens at hospital discharge and clinical outcomes post-discharge. They assessed 4,056 patients (aged ≥ 65 years) with hypertension who were hospitalized from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2013, in Veterans Health Administration national health system facilities for common noncardiac conditions. From October 1, 2018, to March 10, 2019, data analysis was performed. According to findings, prescription of intensified antihypertensives at discharge was not correlated with reduced cardiac events or improved blood pressure control within 1 year, but it was related to an increased risk of readmission and serious adverse events within 30 days among older adults hospitalized for noncardiac conditions.
