Clinical molecular imaging of chemokine receptor CXCR4 expression in atherosclerotic plaque using 68Ga-pentixafor PET: Correlation with cardiovascular risk factors and calcified plaque burden

The Journal of Nuclear Medicine Feb 07, 2018

Weiberg D, et al. - The experts embraced this study to evaluate the prevalence, pattern, and clinical correlates of arterial wall accumulation of 68Ga-pentixafor, a specific CXC-motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) ligand for PET. For noninvasive, highly specific PET imaging of CXCR4 expression in the atherosclerotic arterial wall, 68Ga-pentixafor PET/CT was found to be suitable. Arterial wall 68Ga-pentixafor uptake was significantly correlated with surrogate markers of atherosclerosis and was linked to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. In patients with a high-risk profile, 68Ga-pentixafor signal was higher and could hold promise for identification of vulnerable plaque.
