Clinical heterogeneity among pediatric patients with autoimmune type 1 diabetes stratified by immunoglobulin deficiency

Pediatric Diabetes Apr 14, 2021

Anna H, Małgorzata S, Joanna K, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for assessing the prevalence and clinical features of immunoglobulin deficiency (IgD) among children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). During routine visits, serum samples and medical history questionnaires were collected from T1D patients aged 4‐18 years. Nephelometry and ELISA were used to determine IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE levels. Ninety (22.8%) of 395 patients (53.4% boys) with a median age of 11.2 (8.4 ‐ 13.7) years and diabetes duration of 3.6 (1.1 ‐ 6.0) years were found to have hypogammaglobulinemia. IgDs often coexist with T1D and have been linked to a variety of autoimmune and non-immune disorders, implying a shared genetic history.
