Polonowita AD, et al. - Researchers characterized a clinical case series of patients referred to a hospital specialist service to analyze the clinical effectiveness of a simplified approach to managing chronic temporomandibular disorder (cTMD). Each patient was managed with self-awareness and jaw exercises as well as oral appliances in a 1-year consecutive case series of 162 subjects with cTMDs. After treatment, the mean visual analogue scale pain score dropped from 6.9 to 2.0, giving a "large" 3.1 effect size. In addition, chewing difficulty improvement exhibited a “large” effect size (2.5). According to findings, an easy non-invasive protocol to manage cTMD with self-help, exercises and oral devices led to significant improvements in pain, function, and quality of life, both clinically and statistically.
