Clinical characteristics and risk of hypertension needing treatment in young patients with systolic hypertension identified with ambulatory monitoring
Journal of Hypertension Sep 13, 2018
Palatini P, et al. - This analysis of 1,206 study participants aged 18–45 years from the Hypertension and Ambulatory Recording VEnetia STudy evaluated the risk of hypertension requiring pharmacological treatment in isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) identified with ambulatory 24-h blood pressure (24-h BP) monitoring. A total of 269 participants were normotensive, 209 had ISH, 277 had isolated diastolic hypertension, and 451 had systolic-diastolic hypertension. Cox survival analyses, adjusting for risk factors and confounders, were carried out to assess the predictive role of ISH for incident hypertension. Findings showed that, per data obtained during 24-h BP monitoring, only mean BP was a predictor of future hypertension requiring treatment in individuals with ISH aged >45 years; ISH status alone, however, did not necessarily imply an increase in risk.
