Clinical and patient reported outcomes from patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease across the world: Data from the Global NASH/NAFLD Registry

Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 12, 2021

Younossi ZM, Yilmaz Y, Yu ML, et al. - Presence of high comorbidity burden and impaired quality of life is evident in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients seen in real-world practices in different countries.

  • This is an analysis of data obtained from 5,691 NAFLD patients seen in real-world practices and enrolled in the Global NAFLD/NASH Registry (GNR) including 18 countries in 6 Global Burden of Disease super-regions.

  • Variations (12-21%) were evident in cirrhosis rates; North Africa/Middle East and Eastern Europe showed the highest rates.

  • NAFLD patients showed lower CLDQ-NASH (chronic liver disease questionnaire- NASH) and FACIT-F (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy- Fatigue) PRO (patient-reported outcome) scores vs general population norms.

  • Across the super-regions, Eastern Europe and North Africa/Middle East demonstrated the lowest PRO scores.

  • Younger age, female gender, and non-hepatic comorbidities including fatigue independently predicted lower PRO scores, evident in multivariate analysis adjusted for enrollment region.

  • A substantial PRO improvement was seen in those with improvements in fatigue scores over time.

  • Lean BMI with fewer metabolic syndrome components, fewer comorbidities, less cirrhosis, and significantly better PRO scores were detected in about 8% of GNR patients.
