Circulating miR-155-5p as a novel biomarker of lumbar degenerative disc disease
Spine Apr 22, 2020
Divi SN, Markova DZ, Fang T, et al. - This study was sought to distinguish miRNA dysregulation in serum samples of patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) compared with healthy controls (HC). Researchers collected whole blood samples from 69 patients with DDD and 16 HC. They further obtained patient-reported outcomes preoperatively and degree of DDD was categorized applying Pfirrmann grade on preoperative imaging. This study conducted differential gene expression analysis applying a screening assay for several hundred miRNAs and further characterization for five specific miRNAs (miR-16-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-142-3p, miR-146a-5p, and miR-155-5p). The results exhibit that in patients with DDD, serum miR-155-5p is significantly downregulated and may be a diagnostic marker for degenerative spinal disease.
