Cigarette smoke reduces short chain fatty acid production by a Porphyromonas gingivalis clinical isolate
Journal of Periodontal Research Apr 19, 2019
Zeller I, et al. - Investigators estimated data to study the impact of cigarette smoke on short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. They observed no impact of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on the growth of all 3 bacterial species ie, Filifactor alocis 35896, Fusobacterium nucleatum 25586, and Porphyromonas gingivalis 33277. They noted the highest concentration of a specific SCFA (butyrate) production by F alocis. the most robust overall SCFA signal was provided by P gingivalis. They also noted that F alocis and F nucleatum did not release the detectable levels of isobutyrate or isovalerate.
