Chronic pain in Pachyonychia congenita: Evidence for neuropathic origin

British Journal of Dermatology Dec 13, 2017

Brill S, et al. - Researchers undertook an exploratory analysis of the sensory function of Pachyonychia congenita (PC) patients vs. controls. The intention was to examine the PC pathophysiology. Thermal and mechanical hypoesthesia could arise due to thicker skin. Nevertheless, its presentation in painful regions along with mechanical hyperalgesia and allodynia indicated the possibility of neuropathic changes in PC. It was determined that the clinical features and DN4 scores supported this possibility. Hence, neuropathic pain medications appeared to be beneficial for PC patients.
