Chocolate consumption and risk of cardiovascular diseases: A meta-analysis of prospective studies

Heart Aug 03, 2018

Ren Y, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers analyzed data from studies published up to June 6, 2018, in which the association between chocolate consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) had been studied. These studies were identified from PubMed and EMBASE databases. To model the dose-response association, restricted cubic splines were used. The meta-analysis included 14 publications (23 studies including 405,304 participants and 35,093 cases of CVD). Findings suggested chocolate consumption may be related to reduced risk of CVD at < 100 g/week consumption. Data also suggested that, due to high sugar consumption, higher levels may negate the health benefits and induce adverse effects.
