Characteristics of nursing homes with comprehensive antibiotic stewardship programs: Results of a national survey
American Journal of Infection Control Aug 28, 2019
Fu CJ, Mantell E, Stone PW, et al. - As updated Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulations require nursing homes (NHs) to install antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs), researchers sought to report on the current state of NH ASPs. Conducting a nationally representative survey of 861 NHs in 2018, they noted that 33.2% (6-7) had “comprehensive” ASP policies, 41.1% (4-5) had “moderately comprehensive” ASP policies, and 25.6% (≤ 3) had “not comprehensive” ASP policies. Implementation of antibiotic stewardship was increased after regulation changes. Despite the training of more infection preventionists in infection control, there are still gaps. Findings highlight the necessity for trained staff for comprehensive antibiotic stewardship and the value of Quality Innovation Networks-Quality Improvements Organizations.
