Characteristics of jugular bulb oxygen saturation in patients after cardiac arrest: A prospective study

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jun 14, 2018

Wallin E, et al. - In this prospective observational study in patients over 18 years, researchers assessed variations in jugular bulb oxygen saturation during intensive care in association with neurological outcome at 6 months post- cardiac arrest (CA) in cases where target temperature management (TTM) 33°C was applied. For neurological outcome assessment, the Cerebral Performance Categories (CPC) were used and good outcome was represented by CPC 1-2 and poor outcome by CPC 3-5. They observed that in patients with a good outcome vs those with a poor outcome, differences existed in the oxygen delivery and extraction at single time points. In patients treated with TTM 33°C post-CA, the utility of jugular bulb oxygen saturation in the prognostication remained uncertain.
