Characteristics and outcomes for delayed diagnosis of concussion in pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department

The Journal of Emergency Medicine Oct 10, 2020

Corwin DJ, Arbogast KB, Haber RA, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, researchers compared characteristics and outcomes of patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with a head injury who receive immediate vs delayed diagnosis. The sample consisted of patients (6 to 18 years of age) who were diagnosed with a concussion on their first ED or urgent care visit and patients needing a second visit for diagnosis between July 1, 2017, and June 20, 2019. Eighty-five patients with delayed concussion diagnosis and 159 with the immediate diagnosis were finally included. Concussed children who were acutely assessed for head injury and don't receive an immediate diagnosis may be at risk for persistent symptoms. Use of a concussion-specific physical examination and of a standardized symptom scale can help to acutely recognize concussed young people.
