Changes of neuroretinal rim and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness assessed by optical coherence tomography after filtration surgery in glaucomatous eyes

Clinical Ophthalmology Jun 06, 2021

Koenig SF, et al. - In this retrospective longitudinal study involving 54 patients (54 eyes), researchers sought to assess changes of Bruch’s membrane-based parameters and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) derived by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in eyes that have undergone glaucoma filtration surgery. Data reported that the average preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was 23.1 ± 7.5 mmHg. In patients with medically uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma, IOP-lowering surgery causes an increase in the thickness of the SD-OCT derived ONH parameters. The RNFL changes after surgery had no significant correlations with IOP changes. In contrast, highly significant correlations between minimum rim width values and IOP were found. The BMO-Area was completely stable. The best way to use RNFL for follow-up should be discussed.
