Changes in prevalence of violence and risk factors for violence and HIV among children and young people in Kenya: A comparison of the 2010 and 2019 Kenya Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys

The Lancet Global Health Dec 18, 2021

Annor FB, Chiang LF, Oluoch PR, et al. - In Kenya, the prevalence of lifetime violence as well as some risk factors for violence and HIV reduced significantly between 2010 and 2019 and some service seeking indicators improved during this period. Continued prioritization of preventing and responding to violence in Kenya could lead to further decreases in violence and its negative impacts.

  • In a previous study, a high prevalence of violence was reported in young people in Kenya, and in 2010, it became the third country to implement the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS).

  • Via cross-sectional national household surveys (2010 and 2019 VACS) of young people aged 13–24 years, changes in violence and risk factors for violence and HIV were assessed in Kenya between 2010 and 2019.

  • A significant reduction in the prevalence of lifetime sexual, physical, and emotional violence was noted in 2019 relative to 2010, including unwanted sexual touching, for both women and men.

  • Between 2010 and 2019, reduction in experience of pressured and forced sex among females was evident.

  • In 2019, the number of females who sought and received services for sexual violence was significantly more and significantly more males knew of a place to seek help, relative to 2010.

  • Also, decrease in the prevalence of various risk factors for violence and HIV was observed, including infrequent condom use, endorsement of inequitable gender norms, endorsement of norms justifying wife beating, and never testing for HIV.

  • To monitor violence and related outcomes over time, repeat VACS data could be utilized by other countries in the region that have made substantial investments and implemented similar violence prevention programs.
