Challenges in the acute identification of mild traumatic brain injuries: Results from an emergency department surveillance study
BMJ Open Feb 09, 2020
Pozzato1 I, Meares S, Kifley1 A, et al. - The present study was conducted to develop the proportion of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) diagnosis among people presenting to an emergency department (ED), to determine the accuracy of recorded ED diagnoses. This study was intended to report difficulties in mTBI case identification and its acute hospital management. Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of 30,479 ED attendances to a major trauma hospital, over a 9-month period between June 2015 and February 2016. For ED attendance, it was noted that mTBI is a common, but an under-recognized cause. Notwithstanding challenges, the advantage of an operational definition such as the WHO diagnostic criteria can increase accuracy in mTBI identification. The rapid assessment of post-traumatic amnesia may improve acute management.
