CHA2DS2-VASc score can guide the screening of atrial fibrillation - cross-sectional study in a geriatric ward
Clinical Interventions in Aging Jun 02, 2019
Wojszel ZB, et al. - Among hospitalized patients admitted to the department of geriatrics, researchers investigated independent determinants of atrial fibrillation (AF) in order to pave way for the proposal of a strategy for screening of this arrhythmia. This cross-sectional cohort study included 416 participants, among whom 23.6% presented with AF. Congestive heart failure, aged ≥ 75 years, and previous history of stroke or transient ischemic attack were identified as independent predictors with the strongest links to AF. Upon receiver-operating characteristic analysis, the significance of CHA2DS2-VASc scale as a tool for screening of AF became evident, and the best cut-off point was determined to be a value of ≥ 4. Thus, at a primary prevention population level, the intensity of monitoring for AF could be guided by CHA2DS2-VASc score.
