Cefazolin prophylaxis for total joint arthroplasty: Obese patients are frequently underdosed and at increased risk for periprosthetic joint infection
Journal of Arthroplasty Jul 13, 2018
Rondon AJ, et al. - Experts elucidate what proportion of patients receiving cefazolin prophylaxis are underdosed and whether this increases the risk for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Findings suggested the cefazolin underdosing to be common, especially for patients weighing more than 120 kg. There was a greater likeness of the underdosed patients to develop PJI. Attention ought to be paid to the weight-based dosing of antibiotics in the perioperative period to avoid increasing risk for PJI.
