Carotid intima-media thickness and lipid profile in children with Kawasaki disease: A single-center follow-up study after a mean duration of 6.9 years

JCR: Journal of Clinical Rheumatology Oct 03, 2018

Gopalan K, et al. - Authors evaluated atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, and lipid abnormalities in 27 children with Kawasaki disease (KD) who received appropriate treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin in this single-center follow-up study. Participates were followed-up at least 5 years following the acute episode of KD. The investigators examined carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and fasting lipid profile in participants, and compared the results with values obtained from prior research. They found a significantly higher mean cIMT in those with KD vs control participants, and observed an abnormal lipid profile in 26% (n=7) of children with KD, of whom 71% (n=5) had lipid abnormality at 1-year follow-up. Findings showed that, even when they do not have overt and persistent coronary artery abnormalities, children with KD require careful long-term follow-up. In addition, childhood KD may affect individuals several years later in young adult life.
