Cardiac syncope recurrence in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients vs normoglycemics patients: The CARVAS study
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 01, 2019
Sardu C, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) vs non T2DM patients, researchers studied the connection between heart rate variability (HRV) alterations and vasovagal syncope (VVS) recurrence after 12 months of follow up. For this prospective multicenter study, they investigated a propensity score matching analysis of 121 T2DM vs 121 non-T2DM patients who were affected by VVS. Results of this study suggested an association of blood pressure alterations and lower LF/HF ratio with a higher rate of all-cause syncope recurrence and of vasodepressor, cardioinhibitory, and mixed syncope recurrence. Due to cardiac autonomic neuropathy, autonomic nervous system changes are seen in T2DM patients. However, VVS recurrence was predicted by T2DM diagnosis and autonomic dysfunction evaluated by HRV alterations.
