Cannabis abuse and perioperative complications following inpatient spine surgery in the United States
Spine May 20, 2021
Chiu RG, Patel S, Siddiqui N, et al. - A retrospective cohort analysis of a nationwide administrative database was conducted to examine the relationship between cannabis abuse and serious adverse events following elective spine surgery. A total of 423,978 were included as inclusion/exclusion criteria, 2,393 (0.56%) of whom had cannabis use disorder. Among spine surgery patients, cannabis abuse seems to be correlated with elevated perioperative morbidity. It has been considered that physicians should ensure that a thorough preoperative drug use history is taken, and that affected patients be adequately informed of associated risks.
