Cancer risk in Parkinson disease: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

European Journal of Neurology Sep 16, 2021

Leong YQ, Lee SWH, Ng KY, et al. - The meta-analysis found that those with Parkinson disease (PD) had decreased rates of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological cancers, but higher risks of melanoma and brain cancer.

  • From the commencement of the database to June 4, 2021, four databases were searched for research that looked at the relationship between PD and cancer incidence.

  • Forty papers were included, including 11 case-control studies, two nested case-control studies, 22 cohort studies, and five cross-sectional studies.

  • PD patients exhibited lower chances of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological malignancies when compared with controls.

  • PD patients, on the other hand, had an increased risk of melanoma and brain cancer.

  • There was no link discovered between PD and the risk of female cancers.

  • Subgroup analysis observed negative relations between PD patients and risks of colon cancer, rectal cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
