Can vitamin D supplementation improve the severity of congestive heart failure?

Congestive Heart Failure May 15, 2019

Amin A, et al. - Researchers looked at the possible benefits of vitamin D supplementation on biochemical findings and functional capacity among patients with heart failure (HF) in this prospective study. Study participants included 100 patients with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class I through III HF. For 4 months, participants with insufficient or deficient serum levels of 25(OH)D (< 30 ng/mL and < 20 ng/mL, respectively) were administered oral vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). A marked reduction in serum level of pro-brain natriuretic peptide was evident post-vitamin D supplementation. A significant reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level was induced by cholecalciferol. A substantial improvement in NYHA class and 6-minute walk distance was also seen when serum 25(OH) D level was restored.
