Can haematologic parameters be used to predict testicular viability in testicular torsion?
Andrologia Jul 08, 2019
He M, et al. - Through a study that recruited 58 children with testicular torsion who were treated in Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2006 to December 2018, the experts intended to assess the predictive value of haematologic parameters for testicular survival in torsion. Age, symptom span, preoperative preparation duration, cryptorchidism testicular torsion or not, spermatic cord torsion degree, orchiectomy/orchiopexy, testicular volume 3 months postoperation by ultrasound in orchiopexy patients and haematologic parameters were ascertained for the study. The important predictors of orchiectomy were symptom duration, spermatic cord torsion degree, and mean platelet volume (MPV). During window time for orchiectomy, the cut-off value for MPV was 10.55 fl (10−9 L) which granted a sensitivity and a specificity of 47.8% and 92.6%, respectively. Hence, in testicular torsion, symptom span, degree of spermatic cord torsion and MPV could be indicators of testicular viability. Further, MPV could give valuable information prior to the operation which could help doctors and family members of the subjects for the selection of the relevant treatment.
