Burden of cardio-renal-metabolic conditions in adults with type 2 diabetes within the Diabetes Collaborative Registry
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Apr 28, 2018
Arnold SV, et al. - The prevalence of cardio-renal-metabolic (CaReMe) conditions and their combinations were comprehensively assessed by experts among adults with type 2 diabetes in a USA-based outpatient registry of 271 primary care, cardiology and endocrinology offices. It was determined that the most prevalent individual conditions were hypertension (83%), hyperlipidemia (81%), coronary artery disease (CAD) (32%) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) (20%), and the most common combinations consisted of various groupings of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and CKD. A connection was disclosed between older age, male sex and tobacco use each with increased numbers of CaReMe conditions. Novel treatment strategies were required for diabetes that targeted both glycaemia and coexisting disease states.
