Bronchopulmonary dysplasia and risk of developmental delay: An EPIPAGE-2 cohort study

Neonatology Dec 12, 2021

Tréluyer L, Jarreau PH, Marchand-Martin L, et al. - Findings demonstrate a strong association of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) with the risk of developmental delay.

  • From the French prospective cohort EPIPAGE-2, a total of 2,706 children born before 32 weeks’ gestation were analyzed to determine if the previously shown link between BPD and risk of developmental delay persists.

  • Of those with available Age & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) score (a tool to define risk of developmental delay), BPD was present in 196/1,587 and an ASQ score below threshold was evident in 671/1,587.

  • An association of BPD with an ASQ score below threshold was found (odds ratio 1.52, 95% confidence interval 1.11–2.08; p = 0.008).
