Borderline personality disorder is associated with an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections: A nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan

Sexually Transmitted Infections Apr 18, 2019

Chen SF, et al. - Researchers examined 669 patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and 2,676 controls matched by gender and age in Taiwan to assess if BPD increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI). After adjusting for demographic data and psychiatric comorbidities, they identified a tendency of patients with BPD for getting STI. Also, after excluding the effect of comorbidities, patients with pure BPD significantly displayed the risk association for subsequent STI, after adjusting for all variables in the comorbidity stratification analysis. They recommend considering these findings when developing targeted prevention interventions in Taiwan’s mental health clinics.
