Body mass index category moderates the relationship between depressive symptoms and diet quality in overweight and obese rural-dwelling adults
The Journal of Rural Health Dec 12, 2018
Abshire DA, et al. - This study included a total of 907 rural adults in Kentucky, to compare diet quality among overweight and obese rural-dwelling adults with and without depression and to determine if body mass index (BMI) category moderates the link between depressive symptoms and overall diet quality. To determine depressive symptoms, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used. By means of a food frequency questionnaire, 2005 Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores were generated. The various categories of participants were: overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2) and obese (≥30 kg/m2), and nondepressed (PHQ-9 < 10) and depressed (PHQ-9 ≥ 10). Based on the BMI category and depressive symptom status, variations were seen in the components of diet quality. They noted an impact of BMI category on the link between depressive symptoms and diet quality.
