Blood pressure in athletic preparticipation evaluation and the implication for cardiac remodelling
Heart Jun 06, 2019
Hedman K, et al. - Via this retrospective analysis of athletes (aged 13-35 years) who underwent preparticipation evaluation (PPE) via the Stanford Sports Cardiology program, researchers assessed blood pressure (BP) among these subjects in the context of recently updated US and European hypertension guidelines. They also examined the link between BP and left ventricular (LV) remodeling. They excluded athletes with abnormal ECGs or recognized hypertension. They found one-third of participants exhibited BP levels over the current US guidelines’ thresholds for hypertension, drawing attention to the fact that reducing the BP thresholds at PPE requires careful consideration and efforts to standardize measurements. Findings revealed the association of higher systolic BP with male sex, body mass index and height, and with LV remodeling and diastolic function, indicating raised BP in athletes during PPE could imply a clinically important condition.
