Blood pressure and mortality in a prospective cohort of HIV-infected adults in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Journal of Hypertension Jun 05, 2018
Batavia AS, et al. - Researchers followed-up HIV-infected adults who had participated in a trial of early vs delayed initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti over a long period of time to assess how baseline blood pressure and incident hypertension related to ART initiation, HIV-related inflammation and mortality in HIV-infected adults in a low-income environment. A high prevalence of hypertension was found to be related to HIV-related inflammation in this large prospective study. A more than two-fold increased risk of death was observed in those who had baseline hypertension. Hypertension should be considered a serious threat to long-term survival among HIV-infected adults in low-income countries.
