Biomarkers of oral inflammation in perinatally HIV-infected and perinatally HIV exposed, uninfected youth
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Aug 11, 2019
Moscicki AB, Yao TJ, Russell JS, et al. - In this cross-sectional, multi-center substudy, researchers analyzed oral biomarkers in perinatally HIV-infected and HIV-exposed but non-infected youth associated with the progression of periodontal disease in HIV-infected adults using Wilcoxon test and Spearman correlation. According to findings, the relationship of oral inflammation biomarkers with clinical indicators of periodontal inflammation and systemic immune activation suggests that perinatal youth infected with HIV may be at higher risk for significant periodontal disease associated with tooth loss and progression of HIV. This group requires more frequent dental care to prevent potential periodontal progression. There have been no associations among HIV-uninfected individuals.
