Biomarkers of mineral metabolism and progression of aortic valve and mitral annular calcification: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis May 30, 2019
Bortnick AE, et al. - In the community-based Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, researchers focused on the links of mineral biomarkers with incidence and progression of aortic valve calcification (AVC) and mitral annular calcification (MAC). At baseline and at a median of 2.4 (1.6, 3.1) years later, serum fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23; n=6,547 participants), phosphate (n=6,547), and fetuin-A (n=2,550) levels were assessed for links with AVC and MAC on computed tomography. The evidence generated in this study showed an association of serum FGF-23 with accelerated annual MAC progression. This was not seen for phosphate or fetuin-A. Accelerated annual progression of AVC was not linked with any of these biomarkers.
