Biomarkers for acute kidney injury in decompensated cirrhosis: A prospective study

Nephrology Feb 04, 2018

Jaques DA, et al. - Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication in cirrhotic patients. Given serum creatinine is a poor marker of renal function in this population, researchers examined the utility of several biomarkers in this context. They found that in hospitalized patients with decompensated cirrhosis, serum creatinine (SCr), cystatin C (CystC), NGAL (plasma and urinary), urinary sodium and renal resistive index (RRI) at inclusion were independently associated with the presence of AKI. The subsequent development of AKI could be predicted by SCr, CystC and plasma NGAL. Overall, they interpreted that regarding the AKI etiology, valuable information can be obtained via early measurement of renal biomarkers. Furthermore, it could also improve AKI diagnosis and prognosis.
