Bioimpedance spectroscopy-guided fluid management in peritoneal dialysis patients with residual kidney function: A randomized controlled trial

Nephrology Feb 06, 2019

Yoon HE, et al. - In this multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled trial run over 12 months, researchers assessed the impact of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS)-guided fluid management on residual kidney function (RKF), volume status, and cardiovascular events in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Participants were non-anuric PD patients (urine volume ≥500 mL/day) randomized to clinical method-guided management (n = 98) or BIS-guided management (n = 103). No significant improvement in change in overhydration was seen in the BIS group vs controls after adjustments were made for covariates. With regard to change in peritoneal ultrafiltration volume, blood pressure, body weight, and echocardiographic variables or in cardiovascular event rates, no significant difference was noted between the control and BIS groups. Findings revealed no additional benefit of BIS-guided fluid management for achieving euvolemia, neither it influenced the decline in RKF in non-anuric PD patients.
