International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Feb 15, 2020
Liu X, et al. - In this retrospective study involving 14 individuals treated at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University between January 2010 and December 2016, researchers sought to presents a modified surgical approach combining condylotomy with posterior disc attachment release for the resection of large non-malignant masses located in the infratemporal fossa and involving the skull base. According to findings, all individuals showed satisfactory surgical exposure and complete resection of the neoplasms. No clinical or radiographic signs of recurrence were reported during an average follow-up of 54.8 months. Postoperative MRI and CT scans demonstrated a satisfactory disc position and condyle morphology, with no resorption. In addition, three-dimensional reconstruction of the postoperative CT scan showed healing of the skull base defects. The authors concluded that the modified surgical approach combining condylotomy with posterior disc attachment release is suitable for removing large non-malignant masses which involve the infratemporal fossa and skull base.
