Bacterial burden is associated with increased transmission to health care workers from patients colonized with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus
American Journal of Infection Control Oct 03, 2018
Jackson SS, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers analyzed 96 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE)-colonized intensive care units (ICUs) patients and 5 Healthcare workers (HCWs) per patient to assess if bacterial burden is associated with transmission to HCWs’ gloves or gowns, a surrogate outcome for transmission to subsequent patients. Contamination of HCWs’ gloves or gowns with VRE was observed with 71 of 479 (15%) HCW-patient interactions. Findings revealed a higher tendency of ICU patients with a higher bacterial burden to transmit VRE to HCWs.
