Asymptomatic hypoglycaemia in Type 1 diabetes: Incidence and risk factors
Diabetic Medicine Nov 01, 2018
Henriksen MM, et al. -In type 1 diabetes, researchers analyzed the incidence and risk factors for asymptomatic hypoglycemia. A cohort of 153 individuals with type 1 diabetes undertook 6 days of blinded continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and had hypoglycemia symptoms recorded. In type 1 diabetes, asymptomatic hypoglycemia comprises the majority of hypoglycemic events. Risk factors for asymptomatic hypoglycemia were reduced hypoglycemia awareness and high insulin dose. However, other conventional risk factors for severe hypoglycemia sere not associated with risk of asymptomatic episodes. Findings suggested a correlation of high insulin dose with a higher risk of both asymptomatic and symptomatic hypoglycemia. On the other hand, low HbA1c and long diabetes duration were only risk factors only for symptomatic hypoglycemia.
