Associations of sarcopenic obesity with the metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance over five years in older men: The Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project
Experimental Gerontology Apr 23, 2018
Scott D, et al. - Researchers investigated the associations of sarcopenic obesity with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance over five years in community-dwelling older men. They noted that sarcopenic obesity in older men was associated with two-fold increased risk for MetS. However, this risk was lower than for men with obesity alone, and only obese alone had increased insulin resistance. Increases in body fat over five years were noted to have most consistent association with deleterious changes in MetS components. Sarcopenic obesity was thus not supposed to confer greater risk for incident MetS or insulin resistance than obesity alone in community-dwelling older men.
