Association of vegetation size with valve destruction, embolism and mortality
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Dec 15, 2020
Young WJ, Hoare D, Bvekerwa I, et al. - Researchers examined the link between vegetation size and outcomes including valve destruction, embolism and mortality in patients with infective endocarditis (IE). They identified 142 patients with definite IE and transoesophageal echocardiography imaging available for analysis. Experts assessed vegetation length, width and area. They found an increased risk of valve destruction in relation to vegetation length ≥10 mm or area ≥50 mm2. In medically treated but not surgically treated patients with IE, mortality may be predicted by vegetation size.
