Association of thyroid dysfunction with cognitive function

JAMA Nov 05, 2021

van Vliet NA, van Heemst D, Almeida OP, et al. - This study’s results do not back the requirement for screening for subclinical thyroid dysfunction for prevention of cognitive decline or dementia.

  • This is an individual participant data analysis of 23 cohorts comprising 74,565 participants with cognitive function and/or dementia measurements.

  • Among participants, subclinical thyroid dysfunction was neither related to global cognitive function at baseline (standardized mean difference, −0.02 for subclinical hyperthyroidism and 0.05 for subclinical hypothyroidism) nor to annual decline (standardized mean difference, −0.02 for subclinical hyperthyroidism and −0.00 for subclinical hypothyroidism).
