Association of prior convictions for driving under the influence with risk of subsequent arrest for violent crimes among handgun purchasers

JAMA Internal Medicine Oct 04, 2019

Kagawa RMC, Stewart S, Wright MA, et al. - Through this retrospective, longitudinal cohort study of 79,678 handgun purchasers in California, researchers examined the correlation between previous convictions for driving under the influence (DUI) and ensuing risk of arrest for violent crimes among handgun purchasers. Patients were found using the California Department of Justice Dealer’s Record of Sale database, which keeps information on all legal handgun transfers in the state. In comparison with purchasers without a previous criminal history, those with previous DUI convictions and not any criminal history were at heightened risk of arrest for a Crime Index–listed violent crime, a firearm-related violent crime, and any violent crime. Correlations particularly with DUI conviction persisted, amongst purchasers with a history of arrests or convictions for crimes other than DUI. Previous DUI convictions among legal purchasers of handguns could be related to the risk of ensuing violence, like firearm-related violence. However, even among those with a history of arrests or convictions for crimes of other various types, the risk correlated with DUI conviction was still increased, though the magnitude was less.
