Association of preterm birth with lipid disorders in early adulthood: A Swedish cohort study
PLoS Medicine Oct 28, 2019
Crump C, et al. - Via this first large population-based study, researchers examined the association of preterm birth with an increased risk of lipid disorders. They performed a retrospective national cohort study including all 2,235,012 persons born as singletons in Sweden from 1973 to 1995 (48.6% women). They followed these individuals for lipid disorders using nationwide inpatient, outpatient, and pharmacy data through 2016 (maximum age 44 years). Lipid disorders were identified in a total of 25,050 (1.1%) persons in 30.3 million person-years of follow-up. The analysis revealed an increased risk of lipid disorders in early- to midadulthood in correlation to preterm birth. Early preventive evaluation and long-term monitoring for lipid disorders may be required among persons born prematurely to decrease their future cardiovascular risks.
